Three Word Tale Glossary
Definitions of terms and concepts used in Three Word Tale.
Game Concepts
Three-Word Rule
The core constraint of Three Word Tale: on your turn, you must add exactly three words to the story. Not two. Not four. Exactly three. This rule forces creativity, prevents any single player from dominating, and creates the rhythmic handoff that makes the game work.
Example: “The dragon woke…” → “…up and saw…” → “…a tiny sandwich”
Word Phase
The portion of the game where players take turns adding three words each. Word phases alternate with drawing rounds. A standard game includes 3-5 word phases.
Drawing Round
The portion of the game where all players draw simultaneously. Players can draw on the digital canvas or photograph paper drawings using the camera import feature. Drawing rounds typically happen every 2-3 word phases.
Tale Card
The AI-generated output at the end of a game. The Tale Card includes:
- A generated title for the story
- A coherent summary that weaves together player contributions
- The complete comic strip with all panels
- A permanent, shareable link
Example Tale Card title: “The Sandwich Dragon’s Morning”
Comic Strip
The visual output of a Three Word Tale game. The comic contains:
- The story text, organized by turns
- Player drawings for each drawing round
- Player names and avatars
- Captions and speech bubbles (added by players)
Room
A virtual space where a game takes place. Rooms can be:
- Private: Invite-only, requires room code
- Public: Open to anyone browsing public rooms
Room Code
A four-letter code (e.g., “ABCD”) that players use to join private rooms. The room creator shares this code with invited players.
Game Modes
Real-Time Mode
The default play mode where all players are online simultaneously, taking turns in sequence. Best for scheduled game sessions.
Async Mode
Asynchronous mode allows players to take turns across hours or days. Players receive notifications when it’s their turn. Perfect for:
- Long-distance families in different time zones
- Busy schedules that don’t align
- Slow, thoughtful storytelling
Text-Only Mode
A game variation that skips drawing rounds, focusing purely on collaborative writing. Best for:
- Quick games
- Writing practice
- Players who prefer text
- Accessibility needs
Voting Mode
A competitive variation where players vote on the best word submission and best drawing each round. Creates a game-within-a-game and works well for:
- Adult players
- Writing groups
- Party game settings
Game Elements
Player Turn
A single opportunity for a player to contribute. In standard mode, turns rotate in order. In async mode, players take turns whenever they’re ready.
Round
A complete cycle through all players. A game consists of multiple rounds. Each round includes one word phase and may include a drawing round.
Genre Pack
A themed setting that influences the AI’s Tale Card generation. Genre packs include:
- Whimsical (default, family-friendly)
- Epic Fantasy
- Horror
- Sci-Fi
- Mystery
- Romance
- Noir
- Absurdist Comedy
Prompt Generator
An in-game feature that suggests story starters for players who are stuck. Tap the lightbulb icon during your turn to get a random prompt.
Drawing Features
Camera Import
The feature that allows players to photograph physical drawings and import them into the game. Players draw on paper with crayons, markers, or pencils, then use their device’s camera to capture the image.
Digital Canvas
The built-in drawing interface where players can draw directly on screen using finger or stylus. Includes brush tools, colors, and eraser.
Panel
A single frame in the final comic strip. Each drawing round creates one panel per player.
Tale Card Art
The visual style applied to the AI-generated Tale Card. Varies based on genre pack and story mood.
Sharing & Preservation
Permanent Link
A unique URL for each completed comic that never expires. Anyone with the link can view the comic without an account.
My Comics

Hall of Fame
A curated gallery of exceptional community stories. Players can opt to share their comics to the Hall of Fame.
Memory Book
A collection of a player’s or family’s comics over time, browsable by date, theme, or players involved.
Player Types
Room Creator
The player who creates a room and controls its settings. The creator starts the game and can adjust settings mid-game.
Guest Player
A player who joins a room using a room code without creating an account. Guest players can fully participate but don’t have access to “My Comics” unless they register.
Async Player
A player participating in an async game, taking turns across an extended time period rather than in a single session.
Educational Terms

Story Arc
The narrative structure of beginning, middle, and end that emerges organically from player contributions, later formalized by the AI Tale Card.
Digital Preservation
The practice of saving physical artifacts (like children’s drawings) in digital form. The camera import feature enables digital preservation of artwork.
