Choose how you want to play β€” real-time or async, text-only or with drawing, competitive or collaborative.

Three Word Tale adapts to how you want to play. Choose your mode before starting a game.


Timing Modes

Real-Time Play

Everyone plays together in one session. Best for:

  • Family game nights
  • Party games
  • Classroom activities
  • When everyone is online at the same time

Async Mode ⭐

Take turns across hours or days. Best for:

  • Long-distance families
  • Busy schedules
  • Different time zones
  • Slow, thoughtful storytelling

How it works:

  1. Enable Async Mode in room settings
  2. Take your turn whenever you’re ready
  3. Get notified when it’s your turn again
  4. Stories can span days or weeks

Content Modes

Standard Mode (Words + Drawing)

The full experience β€” alternate between word rounds and drawing rounds. Best for:

  • Most players
  • Visual storytellers
  • The complete Three Word Tale experience

Text-Only Mode

Skip the drawing rounds for pure writing. Best for:

  • Quick games
  • Car rides and travel
  • Players who prefer writing
  • Accessibility needs
  • Focused writing practice

Drawing-Only Mode (Experimental)

Skip words entirely β€” tell the story through sequential art. Best for:

  • Visual artists
  • Comic creators
  • Non-verbal storytelling

Competition Modes

Collaborative Mode (Default)

Everyone contributes; everyone wins. The story belongs to all players equally. Best for:

  • Families
  • Team building
  • Cooperative creativity

Voting Mode (Competitive)

Players vote on the best contribution each round. Best for:

  • Writing groups
  • Party games
  • Friendly competition
  • Adult players

Voting categories:

  • Best Twist β€” Most unexpected turn
  • Best Drawing β€” Most creative artwork
  • Best Continuation β€” Best advancement of the story

Private Rooms

Invite-only. Share the room code with people you choose. Best for:

  • Family games
  • Friend groups
  • Classrooms
  • Controlled environments

Public Rooms

Open to anyone. Join games with players worldwide. Best for:

  • Meeting new people
  • When friends aren’t online
  • Community building
  • Quick games anytime

Safety in public rooms:

  • Content moderation
  • Report and block features
  • Anonymous play (no personal info required)

Round Count

  • Standard β€” 5 rounds (30-45 minutes)
  • Epic β€” 8+ rounds (1+ hours)

Turn Timer

  • No timer β€” Take your time (great for async)
  • Relaxed β€” 2 minutes per turn
  • Standard β€” 1 minute per turn
  • Speed β€” 30 seconds per turn

Drawing Time

  • Whimsical genre, Collaborative, 5 rounds

Classroom Writing Exercise

  • Real-time, Text-only, 1-minute timer
  • No genre, Collaborative, 3 rounds

Long-Distance Family

  • Async, Standard mode, No timer
  • Any genre, Collaborative, 5-8 rounds

Adult Party Game

  • Real-time, Standard mode, 30-second timer
  • Absurdist or Horror genre, Voting mode, 3 rounds

Writing Club

  • Async or Real-time, Text-only or Standard
  • Any genre, Voting mode, 5+ rounds

Quick Break

  • Real-time, Text-only, Speed timer
  • Any genre, Collaborative, 3 rounds

Changing Settings Mid-Game

Some settings can be adjusted after starting:

  • Extend the round count
  • Enable/disable voting
  • Add a timer
  • Switch from async to real-time (with player agreement)

The room creator can modify settings from the pause menu.
