No-Friction Lobby: How to play without an account

Why we made our multiplayer game completely account-free for kids and grandparents.

Three Word Tale does not require players to create an account, making it the perfect family game for children who don’t have email addresses and grandparents who don’t want to deal with new passwords.

The Problem with “Family Games”

Have you ever tried to start a remote family game night on Zoom? It usually starts like this:

“Okay Grandma, download the app. No, the blue app. Now click create account. Did you get the email verification? Okay, type in a password. No, it needs an uppercase letter.”

Half the family is frustrated before the game even starts. This is a massive barrier for accessibility, especially when playing with kids under 10 or older relatives.

Enter the No-Friction Lobby

When we built Three Word Tale, our #1 design rule was: Zero friction to entry.

We use Convex’s anonymous authentication to achieve this. The only person who needs to actually “log in” is the game host (so we know who owns the private room). Everyone else? They just need your 4-letter code!

How To Invite Your Family

If you want to start a game with your nieces, nephews, or friends across the country, here is all it takes:

  1. You (the host) log in and click Create Room.
  2. A 4-letter code appears on your screen (e.g. XYZA).
  3. You text or read that code out loud on Zoom.
  4. Your family members go to threewordtale.com, type XYZA into the giant box, and hit Join.

That’s it. They don’t provide an email. They don’t invent a password. They don’t verify a phone number.

Safe & Private By Default

Because we don’t handle player accounts, we don’t store your family’s personal data.

  • COPPA/GDPR-K Compliant: We don’t track kids because there are no accounts to track!
  • Private Rooms Only: The 4-letter codes are completely private and collision-resistant. Strangers cannot pop into your family’s game.

Three Word Tale is built around creating memories, not collecting data. Start your first game and invite your family in seconds!
